These proof and uncirculated gold coins are being struck as a part of the First Spouse Gold Coin series. The gold coins issued to accompany any President who served without a spouse will each feature a design emblematic of Liberty on its obverse, as depicted on a United States coin issued during the President's time in office. The obverse, designed by United States Mint Engraver Christian Gobrecht, is a reproduction of the Liberty Seated Dime obverse coin design minted in the early 1800s. The reverse, designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Master Designer Thomas Cleveland and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Jim Licaretz, depicts Martin Van Buren as a young man at the family-operated tavern in the village of Kinderhook, New York.
This limited-edition cover—only 35,000 will be produced—is the 49th in the series and features two Alaska quarters, one each from the United States Mints at Philadelphia and Denver, from the first day of mintage, July 14, 2008.
