The Library's Asian Division of the Library of Congress, in cooperation with the Greater Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Chinese American Librarians Association, presented Hwa-Wei Lee, former chief of the Asian Division and dean emeritus of Ohio University Libraries, who discussed "Achieving Library Excellence: Employing Modern Management Practices."
The presentation reviewed the four major management practices - management by objective (MBO), participative management (PM), total quality management (TQM) and knowledge management (KM) and discussed best practices in achieving library excellence.
Speaker Biography: Hwa-Wei Lee, former chief of the Library's Asian Division and dean emeritus of Ohio University Libraries, has more than 40 years of experience in academic libraries, including the University of Pittsburgh, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, Asian Institute of Technology (in Bangkok, Thailand), Colorado State University, Ohio University, Ohio University, OCLC and the Library of Congress. He is a highly regarded academic in the library communities and a sought-after lecturer and consultant in the United States and Asia. He authored or co-authored five books and 80 professional papers. Upon his retirement in 1999 after serving for more than 21 years as the dean of libraries, Ohio University named a new library building as Hwa-Wei Lee Library Annex and the first floor of the main library as Hwa-Wei Lee Center for International Collections. Among the many honors he received are the Distinguished Service Awards of the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association and the Chinese American Librarians Association, Ohio Librarian of the Year, John Ames Humphrey Award of the American Library Association for Significant Contributions to International Librarianship, Ohio Librarian Hall of Fame, and OCLC award for significant contributions as OCLC Visiting Distinguished Scholar.
