Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act Research and Demonstration Project
Program Description
The discretionary grant activities funded by the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA)
support research on the causes, prevention, and treatment of child abuse and neglect and the
development and implementation of evidence-based training programs. Grants are provided to State
and local agencies and organizations as well as university- and hospital-affiliated programs. Projects
have focused on every aspect of the prevention, identification, investigation, assessment and t
reatment of child abuse and neglect. The Children’s Bureau is currently funding the following
projects under CAPTA FY ’04 discretionary funds:
- Systems of Care – 9 grants
- Replication of Effective Prevention Programs – 8 grants
- Evaluation of Existing Prevention Programs – 4 grants
- Field Initiated Child Abuse and Neglect Demonstration – 8 grants
- University Research Fellowships in Child Abuse and Neglect – 11 grants
- Quality Improvement Centers in CPS and Adoption - 4 grants
- National Resource Center on Child Protective Services – 1 grant
- The Consortium for Longitudinal Studies of Child Maltreatment (known as LONGSCAN) consists of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Coordinating Center and five satellite sites in North Carolina, Seattle, Chicago, San Diego and Baltimore.
- Greenbook Project (Community-based collaborations between domestic violence and child welfare agencies)
- User Manual Series (Publications on child abuse and neglect issues targeted to professionals in various disciplines.)
- 15th National Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect
- Citizen Review Panels Feasibility Study
- Consortium on Child Neglect Research (Interagency Agreement with NIH)
- "Project Making Medicine" (Interagency Agreement with Indian Health Services)
- Systems of Care TA (Interagency Agreement with Center for Mental Health Services, SAMHSA)
