The prostate and losing weight

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

Outside of getting medical treatment, there hasn’t been much a man can do himself to reduce his chances of dying once he’s developed high-grade prostate cancer. But a study indicates there may be something – weight control – because the study indicates obesity raises the risk of dying.

Researchers say obese men with prostate cancer have more than two and a half times the risk of dying.

Alan Kristal of Seattle’s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center bases that on about 10 years of data on more than 750 men. The study, which was supported by the National Institutes of Health, is in the journal Cancer.

"This is the first evidence we have that losing weight would probably affect your risk after treatment. It’s pretty strong motivation, if you’re overweight, to lose weight and keep it off." (10 seconds)
