WELCOME:
The Community Recreation Division has as its mission the promotion of the physical and mental well-being of military personnel, their families and other authorized users by providing recreational, skills development and physical activity opportunities.

The Community Recreation Division accomplishes this mission through programs, activities and its facilities.

The Community Recreation Division is comprised of the Arts and Crafts Center, Auto Craft Shop, Patient Recreation Program, Post-Patient Library, Information, Tickets and Reservations Program, Outdoor Recreation Facility, Fitness Center and Sports Program. More detailed information on these programs and facilities are provided in this brochure.

Let me extend an invitation to you to visit our facilities and participate in the programs offered. You will find a professional and knowledgeable staff eagerly waiting to be of assistance and a variety of quality programs in which to participate.


ARTS & CRAFT:

The Arts & Crafts Center at Forest Glen is sponsored by the Community Recreation Division to meet the creative recreational needs of the Walter Reed Community.

The Arts & Crafts Center features a woodshop, ceramics studio, photography lab, framing shop, studios for stained glass, painting, printmaking, drawing and leatherwork. Our sales stores carries supplies for the various crafts featured.

Woodshop - The Woodshop in the Arts & Crafts Center is equipped with top quality cabinet-making machinery and a large selection of professional hand and power tools. The shop has an 8" joiner, 24" planer, two 10" table saws, a lathe, a shaper, drill presses, band saws, stationary sanders as well as the latest technology for dovetail cutting and biscuit joinery.

Our staff can advise you on all phases of your project, from developing working drawings through construction, to choosing the appropriate stain and finish. A wide selection of fine plywoods, and domestic hardwoods can be purchased at the center as well.

Ceramics Studio - Our ceramics studio offers facilities for casting, hand building and wheel throwing. There are five electric kilns for ceramic firing. Choose from our collection of over 200 molds; new molds arrive regularly!

Photography Lab - The Arts & Crafts Center has a well-equipped photo lab to meet your needs. Our darkroom has four enlargers for black and white printing.

Framing Studio - For custom framing, the Arts & Crafts Center offers an extensive selection of mats and wood or metal frames. Our prices are excellent! Archival framing is available and special matting techniques such as French matting also are offered. For the do-it-yourselfer, there is a well-equipped framing studio that can be used for a nominal fee.

Jewelry - The jewelry workshop has tools and equipment for casting, soldering, buffing and grinding. Patrons must supply their own precious metals.

Advanced/Intermediate Stained Glass February 26 - March 26 Thursday 6:00 8:30 Tuition: $50.00

Stained Glass Studio - The Center features a stained glass studio for your glass project needs. A complete selection of tools and three glass grinders are available for your use. The usage fee includes flux, patinas, cement and whiting. The Center resale store has a beautiful range of glass as well as tools and solder.

Painting/Drawing Open Studio Tuesdays 5:30 - 8:30 Tuition $5.00 Per Session

Paper Marbelizing Workshop April 4 Saturday 1:00-5:30 Tuition:$10:00

Fine Arts - The Arts & Crafts Center provides studio space, equipment and instruction for painting, drawing, silk screening and block printing.

Video Rental - A wide selection of instructional videos is available for a nominal rental fee.

Library - The center has an extensive technical library for your research needs.

Equipment Rental - The Center rents woodworking tools such as belt sanders and drills as well as photographic equipment such as camcorders, 35mm cameras and slide projectors.

AUTO CRAFT SHOP:
The Auto Craft Shop offers a 5-bay garage with hydraulic lifts for the shade tree mechanic. Our trained shop personnel are available to assist patrons in making maximum use of the facilities. Our well-equipped shop has a wheel balancer, brake machine, engine analyzer, tire machine and tools for your repair needs.

The Auto Craft Shop offers a wide range of services such as a tune-up, oil change, transmission repair, radiator flush, suspension service, brake work, air conditioning service and most other minor repairs.

If you are pressed for time or prefer not to do your own repairs, the Auto Craft Shop will do minor repairs for you, by appointment only. Please call for further information.

Busch Gardens - At the Old Country Williamsburg. Opens late March through October. Enjoy the food, fun, rides and entertainment of England, France, Germany, and Italy. Also features special engagements.

King's Dominion - At Doswell, VA. Opens April through November, Fantastic thrilling rides. Fun, food and drink. Great live entertainment and shows.

Adventure World - At Central Avenue, Mitchellville, MD. Opens late May through September. Exciting thrill rides and kiddie rides too! Splashing good times in the Water Park. Great live entertainment and shows. Picnic areas, delicious food and drinks - all you can eat.

Sesame Place - At Langhorne, PA. Opens late April through October 9. The Park is themed around the popular television show "Sesame Street" and features a wonderful blend of wholesome physical play and water activities, stimulating "hands-on" exhibits, challenging computer games and live entertainment geared towards families with children ages 3 to 13.

Sea World - From the sunlit expanse of Shamu stadium to the dark, ominous domain of "Terrors of the Deep" guests come face to face with magnificent marine animals and their exotic environments.

Busch Gardens - At Tampa, FL. Share the spirit of a distant land, where the adventure of Africa joins the warmth of Florida.

National Aquarium in Baltimore
- Your imagination will fly and your spirits will soar when you visit the National Aquarium in Baltimore. At the new 1,300 seat marine mammal pavilion you'll see bottlenose dolphins demonstrate their incredible grace and agility. You'll see 5,000 other creatures from around the globe. So visit the National Aquarium in Baltimore soon and feel the magic for yourself.

Disney World - The following passes must be ordered at least five days in advance. Walt Disney World Four Day Value Pass, Magic Kingdom Four Day Pass, Magic Kingdom Five Day Pass, Walt Disney World Four Day Park Hopper and Walt Disney World Five Day Hopper. AFRC Hotel - Shades of Green: The Army has opened an AFRC hotel on site at Walt Disney World. These rooms are 450 square feet; each one has two queen sized beds and a fold out couch. A family of five or six will be very comfortable. Hotel offers swimming pools and guest dining room.

Other Patron Services Provided - Acquisition of nonconsignment tickets, custom designed packages. Speciality Events: Theater tickets, sporting events, concerts and plays.

OUTDOOR RECREATION RESOURCE CENTER:
The DPCA, Community Recreation Division, Outdoor Recreation Resource Center offers a variety of seasonal outdoor recreation rental equipment and special interest activities for individuals and groups.

There are three covered pavilions available for your unit, office or family picnic. The area include's BBQ grills, volleyball and basketball courts, softball fields, rest rooms and a large parking area. The area is available to active duty, dependents, retirees, reservists, DOD civilians and outside organizations with command approval.

Fall and winter activities include white water rafting, skiing, over night camping, fishing, flea markets and golf tournaments.

A very economical ski maintenance service (ski tune-up) is available. Our newly renovated ski shop offers a range of ski accessories for sale.

Every Wednesday there is "Twofer ski special" - rent one (ski set) and get the second rental free.

The Outdoor Recreation Resource Center can organize group special interest tours within 60 days upon request.

You can store your RV, boat and/or car in a secured fenced area for $30 a month, space permitting.

At the Outdoor Recreation Resource Center, there is equipment to satisfy your every seasonal recreational need.

PATIENT RECREATION BRANCH:
The Patient Recreation Branch provides a diversified leisure-time program for WRAMC In-Patients, their families and guests. The Patients' Lounge provides table tennis and billiard tables, television and VCR movie viewing, reading area, board and card game tables, issue/information desk and kitchen for refreshments.

Other facets of the Patient Recreation Branch Program encompass ward programs, bingo programs, local area tours, live shows, crafts programs and community programs with local religious groups and schools. Jointly sponsored programs with the Red Cross, Chaplains' Office, dining facility and other recreation facilities such as the WRAMC Crafts Show are featured.
