Raleigh, NC -- The Disaster Recovery Center in Swan Quarter will remain open through Thursday, October 2.

The recovery center was originally scheduled to close after five days, but so many people have been coming to the center that its stay was doubled.

The recovery center is located at Mattamuskeet High School on U.S. Highway 264 East in Swan Quarter, and is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Before visiting the center, residents must first have applied for aid by telephone. The FEMA toll-free numbers to apply for assistance are 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or (TTY) 1-800-462-7585 for the hearing- or speech-impaired.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
