National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program
As part of the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP), authorized by Congress in December 2000, the Library is helping develop a national strategy to collect, archive and preserve the burgeoning amounts of digital content for current and future generations.
Web Capture and Archiving
The Library’s commitment to providing digital access to materials of historical importance extends to content that exists only in digital form, including Web sites. In 2004, the Library’s Office of Strategic Initiatives created a Web Capture team to support the goal of managing and sustaining at-risk digital content.
MINERVA was the Library’s first Web preservation project, and its success led to the development of the Web Capture team. The program was established to collect and preserve online primary source materials and to develop thematic Web archives on such topics as the United States elections, the Iraq War, and September 11.

With the guidance of curators and other staff, the Library has developed an integrated strategy for digitizing and providing access to certain at-risk materials.
