Corps partners with SOLV on Down by the River event at Elk Creek

PORTLAND, Ore. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is partnering with SOLV to host a Down by the Riverside event along the banks of Elk Creek northeast of Medford, Ore.

The clean up and habitat enhancement project planned for Saturday, May 17, will include trash and noxious weed removal, wetland vegetation planting and habitat enhancement along the banks of Elk Creek.

Volunteer orientation begins at 9 a.m. with activities ending around 1 p.m. Volunteers should plan to meet just inside the main gates of the project and are urged to bring their lunches and wear sturdy closed-toe shoes and long pants as much of the work will be on uneven terrain. Gloves, tools and drinking water will be available throughout the day.

Families, groups and individuals may pre-register through SOLV’s Web site by visiting www.solv.org/programs/down_by_the_riverside.asp. Scroll down to Jackson County’s listings then click on the “register now” button for “Elk Creek Cleanup”

This local clean-up is part of the larger annual SOLV effort, Down by the Riverside, which encourages people to get involved in environmental stewardship activities in their local communities. Last year, over 11,500 volunteers from across Oregon and southwest Washington participated in Down by the Riverside projects at public parks and green spaces. Volunteers learn about their personal impact on local watersheds and strengthen community resources to enhance and protect these valuable places.

The Elk Creek Project is located two miles upstream of the Elk Creek, Rogue River and Hwy 62 junction, near Trail, Ore.

For more information on this event, contact Len Vaglia at the Corps’ Rogue River Ranger Office at (541) 878-2255.
