PORTLAND, Ore. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced today that both visitor facilities at the Bonneville Lock and Dam project have opened after being closed since Dec. 17, due to inclement weather and hazardous driving conditions.
Visitors to the Washington Shore Visitor Center may still join a holiday season guided tour through Bonneville Lock and Dams’ second powerhouse. During this time, visitors will learn about dam history, operations, power generation and fish passage, and walk across two generators to see the shaft that connects the turbine to the generator. Guided walks will occur at 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 31, and on Jan. 2 and 3, 2009.
To get to the Washington Shore Visitor Center, travel on Washington State Route 14 to milepost 39, and turn onto the Dam Access Road about one mile west of the dam or three miles west of the Bridge of the Gods.
While at Bonneville Dam, visitors may also visit the Bradford Island Visitor Center located on the Oregon side of the river, see navigation locks, and stop by the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Fish Hatchery to catch a glimpse of Herman, the 10-foot long sturgeon.
For information on the second powerhouse tour and other events, contact Bonneville Lock and Dam at (541) 374-8820.
Both visitor centers are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
