Corps offers holiday tours of Bonneville Dams’ second powerhouse

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will offer guided tours this holiday season of the Bonneville Lock and Dam second powerhouse located on the Washington side of the Columbia River.

During the tour, visitors will learn about Bonneville Lock and Dam’s history, operations, power generation and fish passage, and also will walk across two generators to see the shaft that connects the turbine to the generator. Guided walks will occur at 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 20, 24, 26, 27, and 31, as well as Jan. 2 and 3, 2009. Those interested in joining a tour should meet near the glass-walled orientation building of the Washington Shore Visitor Center.

To get to the Washington Shore Visitor Center, travel on Washington State Route 14 to milepost 39, and turn onto the Dam Access Road about one mile west of the dam or three miles west of the Bridge of the Gods.

While at Bonneville Dam, visitors may also visit the Bradford Island Visitor Center located on the Oregon side of the river, see navigation locks, and stop by the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Fish Hatchery to catch a glimpse of Herman, the 10-foot long sturgeon.

For information on the second powerhouse tour and other events, contact Bonneville Lock and Dam at (541) 374-8820.

NOTE: Bonneville Lock and Dam visitor centers and recreation areas inside park gates are open daily, but are closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Years Day.
