Intermittent closures begin this week
PORTLAND, Ore. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will close the road over Detroit Dam from November 10 through February 2009 to work on the dam's spillway gates.
There will be additional partial-day road closures between now and November 10 to move equipment into the area. The Corps will close the road on Monday from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m.
Closure of the road will prevent access from the north to Forest Service Road 2212, also known as Kinney Creek Road. The road, which usually is closed for most of the winter due to snow, provides seasonal access to logging, hunting and other recreational activities.
The Corps will position a high-capacity crane on the roadway to replace the wire rope hoists used to open and close the gates on the dam. This requires road closure for all vehicles and pedestrians.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operates 13 dam and reservoir projects in the Willamette River drainage system. Each dam contributes to a water resource plan designed to provide flood damage reduction, power generation, irrigation, water quality improvement, fish and wildlife habitat, recreation and navigation on the Willamette River and many of its tributaries.
Travelers may call 541-942-5631 for road closure updates as they become available.
