PORTLAND, Ore. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will escort interested reporters to the north jetty sand berm repair project at the Mouth of the Columbia River, Monday, Aug. 25.
The Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company’s dredge, Liberty Island, will be pumping sediment dredged from the channel at the mouth of the Columbia River onto Benson Beach for repairs to the sand berm. Corps representatives will be available to discuss how this beneficial use of dredged material will provide the north jetty extra protection from storms.
As a safety precaution, the area adjacent to the north jetty and along Benson Beach is closed to the public until completion of the work, which will be no later than Sept. 15.
The event is scheduled for Aug. 25 between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., but timing is dependant on the weather and project schedule. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and dress appropriately for a construction site. Interested media should RSVP to Jennifer Sowell at
