Corps seeks comments on Coos, Winchester Bays permit applications

PORTLAND, Ore. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is seeking comments on three applications for permits to conduct work in waters of the United States. The public notices regarding these permit applications were issued during the week of June 8, 2008.

Public Notice NWP-2007-538 describes a proposal by Oregon Resources Corp. to excavate sand deposits from five mining locations in the Cape Arago area 9 to 12 miles south of Coos Bay, Ore., in order to extract desirable minerals.

The project would impact up to 7.51 acres of wetlands and 0.57 acre of tributary waters. Comments must be received by July 8.

Public Notice NWP-2008-291 describes a proposal by Fred Messerle and Sons Inc. to remove up to 5,500 cubic yards of sediment from Catching Slough and Boone Creek near Coos Bay, Ore., in order to maintain adequate drainage to prevent flooding. Comments must be received by July 8.

Public Notice NWP-2008-116 describes a proposal by Ronald Eakin to discharge up to 2,890 cubic yards of clean fill into 0.87 acre of wetlands abutting River Mile 1.5 of Winchester Creek in Winchester Bay, Ore., in order to create a recreational park. Comments must be received by July 11.

The Corps is soliciting comments on these proposals from the public; federal, state and local agencies; Indian Tribes; and other interested parties. The public notices which provide more information are available at http://www.nwp.usace.army.mil/op/g/public.asp.

The Corps issues or denies permits under authority of Section 404 of the Clean Water Act for discharge of dredged or fill material into U.S. waters, and/or Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1899 for work in or affecting navigable waters of the United States.
