Corps Bonneville Lock and Dam hosts Earth Day events

Corps’ Bonneville Lock and Dam hosts Earth Day events

PORTLAND, Ore. — Bonneville Lock and Dam will celebrate Earth Day Saturday, April 19, with a variety of special activities.

Two films will be shown at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Bradford Island Visitor Center addressing environmental stewardship. The first film, “The Lorax,” is based on the Dr. Seuss story that chronicles the greedy, tree-chopping Once-lers and the brave little Lorax who speaks up for the vanishing forest. The other film, “The Man Who Planted Trees” follows the life of a solitary shepherd who patiently plants and nurtures thousands of trees, single-handedly transforming his arid surroundings into a thriving oasis. Both films will be shown in the theater on an alternating basis at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Other activities designed for children and their parents include storytime readings in the Bradford Island Visitor Center at noon and 2 p.m., as well as a ranger-led “Knowing the Forest” program at 11 a.m. at the Washington Shore Visitor Complex.

“Knowing the Forest” is designed for children aged ten and under. Students will learn the principles of environmental stewardship and safe hiking; they also can take part in a scavenger hunt and a “Leave No Trace,” hike. This is a great spot for a picnic, so bring a sack lunch!

In addition to the Earth Day events, scheduled tours of the historic Powerhouse One will be available and you can see Herman, the 10-foot long sturgeon, from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Bonneville Fish Hatchery.

Admission is free for all activities.

The Bradford Island Visitor Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Bonneville Lock and Dam is located off Interstate 84 at Exit 40. The Washington Shore Visitor Complex is located on State Route 14, approximately two miles east of North Bonneville.
