PORTLAND, Ore. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is seeking comments on an application for a Department of the Army permit to conduct work in waters of the United States. The public notice regarding this permit application was issued during the week of Feb. 10, 2008.
Public Notice NWP-2008-47 describes a proposal by Chetco River Mining & Explorations LLC to dredge for precious metals in the Chetco River within the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest and Kalmiopsis Wilderness northeast of Brookings, Ore.
The proposed project would process up to 177 cubic yards of material annually in a segment of the river designated Wild and Scenic.
The Corps is soliciting comments on this proposal from the public; federal, state and local agencies; Indian Tribes; and other interested parties. Comments must be received by March 14. The public notice which provides more information is available at http://www.nwp.usace.army.mil/op/g/public.asp.
The Corps issues or denies permits under authority of Section 404 of the Clean Water Act for discharge of dredged or fill material into U.S. waters, and/or Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1899 for work in or affecting navigable waters of the United States.
