Corps seeks public comments on Willow Creek Lake irrigation project

PORTLAND, Ore. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issued a proposal yesterday to provide for the long-term withdrawal of irrigation water from the Willow Creek Project.

The Corps is proposing to provide up to 2,500 acre-feet of storage annually from Willow Creek Lake for irrigation use during the spring and summer growing season. Stored water in the lake would be used as an irrigation source for up to 2,500 acres of agricultural lands planted in alfalfa and small grains.

Willow Creek Lake is located directly upstream from the City of Heppner in Morrow County, Ore.

In accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act, the Corps has prepared a draft Environmental Assessment to determine whether the proposed action has the potential to cause significant environmental effects. All public comments will be considered in the completion of this EA.

The draft EA addressing the impacts associated with this activity and the complete public notice can be viewed online at https://www.nwp.usace.army.mil/pm/e/en_plan_assess.asp.

Public comments on the draft EA must reach the Corps by Nov. 30, 2007. Written comments should be mailed to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Portland District, Attn: CENWP-PM-E/Carolyn Schneider, P.O. Box 2946, Portland, OR 97208-2946. Comments should include the reference number: CENWP-PM-E-07-07, the public notice title and date.

Additional information may be obtained by contacting Carolyn Schneider at (503) 808-4770, or by e-mail, Carolyn.B.Schneider@usace.army.mil.
