Corps of Engineers encourages alternate recreation sites to Celilo Park March 10 and 11

PORTLAND, Ore. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is encouraging visitors to use other Corps recreational facilities near The Dalles Saturday and Sunday, March 10 and 11, when tribal ceremonies will be held at Celilo Park.

Events planned by the residents of Celilo Village, the Wy-Am Board and tribal leaders include an honoring ceremony, traditional salmon dinner and informational exhibits at Celilo Park.

“The events planned for March 10 and 11 are commemorating Celilo Falls, 50 years after they were inundated,” Portland District Commander Col. Thomas O’Donovan said. “Out of respect for their planned activities, the Corps is asking those not participating in those events at Celilo Park to visit any of our other recreational sites.”

For boating activities on the Oregon shore, the Heritage Landing boat ramp at Deschutes State Park, or the Giles French Park Boat Ramp are available. Deschutes State Park is located 17 miles east of The Dalles. Eastbound traffic on Interstate 84 take exit 97 on to Highway 206 and follow the signs to the park. Giles French Park is located at exit 109 off of Interstate 84, go north, and turn right.

Boaters wishing to use the Washington shore may use The Dalles North Shore Boat Ramp, or Maryhill State Park. The Dalles Lock and Dam is located off of Hwy 197 just north of The Dalles Bridge, and Maryhill State Park is located on highway 97. Visitors can travel on Interstate 84, travel north on hwy 97 over the bridge into Washington, and the park located to the right.

Information on this event can be found at the Wy-Am website, www.celilowyam.org, or by calling (888) 289-1855.
