PORTLAND, Ore. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Portland District is proud to participate in the 13th annual National Public Lands Day.
National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance public lands. Two key events in the District offer volunteer opportunities that will add to the estimated 90,000 volunteers at 1,000 partner sites across the country.
For the first, join Bonneville Lock and Dam park rangers at 9 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 30 to help with shoreline clean-up, habitat restoration, trail improvements and invasive species removal at Bass Lake. The work is expected to last two to three hours and will be followed by a complimentary luncheon and educational tour of Bonneville Dam and the surrounding area.
Park rangers will carpool volunteers to Bass Lake. To ride in the carpool, meet at 8:30 a.m. at either the Washington Shore Visitor Center parking lot or the Bradford Island Visitor Center on the Oregon side. You can also reach Bass Lake directly by heading north on Hot Spring Way off of Washington State Highway 14, then turn east onto Cascade Drive. Bass Lake is about 1/4 mile ahead on the right. Secondly, park rangers in the Rogue River Basin invite volunteers to help with shoreline enhancement and picking up discarded fishing line to protect wildlife from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 30. Volunteers should meet at 10 a.m. at the McGregor Park Visitor Center, located about 30 miles north east of Medford off Oregon State Highway 62. For more information, call (541) 878-2255.
All volunteers will receive a coupon for a “fee-free” day at any recreation site managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S.D.A. Forest Service and National Park Service.
