PORTLAND, Ore. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is holding, a public informational meeting from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday, July 19, at the Sunriver Resort, Greathall Conference Center, Landmark Rooms I and II, Sunriver, Ore. This meeting will provide the public an overview of the Military Munitions Response Program (MMRP), Site Investigation (SI) process and the current work plan.
The Corps is evaluating Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) that had historically been used for military training. One of these sites, Camp Abbot, is located in Deschutes County, near Bend, Ore. The Corps will do this evaluation by conducting a MMRP, SI. The SI will be conducted in the next few months by a Corps contractor, Shaw Environmental. The work to be performed will include access to and a visual inspection of property that was part of the Camp Abbot. The inspection may also include soil and/or water sampling.
Camp Abbot was constructed in 1942 and served as a training facility designed to train combat engineers in a simulated combat environment. By June 1944, the camp was abandoned and most of the settlement razed.
