PORTLAND, Ore. - Members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Portland District were deployed to Florida and Georgia after hurricanes hit the area.
The Corps is providing technical assistance to state and local authorities after Hurricanes Charley and Frances ripped through Florida. The Corps is working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on response and recovery missions, including water and ice supply, power, logistics, temporary housing and roofing, and debris and structural damage assessments.
Fourteen team members have been deployed from the Corps' Portland District and joined others in assisting in building temporary housing and roofing, logistics and emergency support. Others may be deployed for additional support depending on the route and impact of Hurricanes Ivan and Jean.
Part of the Corps' mission is to assist FEMA during disaster response and recovery operations in the public works and engineering arenas. Corps employees from Portland have responded to natural disasters in other portions of the United States. They responded to the Loma Prieta Earthquake (San Francisco) in 1989; Guam-1989; Hurricane Hugo-1989; Hurricane Andrew-1992; Midwest floods-1993; Northridge Earthquake-1994; Hurricane Marilyn-1996; Hurricane Georges-1998 and Hurricane Floyd-1999.
