PORTLAND, ORE. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will close Willamette Falls Locks to vessel traffic for three consecutive days starting Sept. 8 to allow Portland General Electric to make improvements to its fish passage facilities at Sullivan Plant.
On Sept. 8, 9 and 10, barges will be moored in the locks. Though the locks will be closed to routine river traffic, limited vessel passage may be coordinated with the lockmaster in advance by calling him at (503) 656-3381. The locks will reopen to vessel traffic on Sept. 11.
No funding is included in the President's fiscal year 2005 budget for Willamette Falls Locks, which will result in the Corps indefinitely closing the locks on Oct. 1, 2004.
The Corps has operated the Willamette Falls Locks, located in West Linn, Ore., since 1915. The project is on the National Register of Historic Places and designated as a State Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
