Corps seeks new ideas for sediment management at MCR

PORTLAND, Ore.- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is facilitating two free events in September for people interested in the management of sediment at the Mouth of the Columbia River (MCR).

The first event is an MCR regional sediment management (RSM) workshop to take place in the Student Center of Lower Columbia College in Longview, Wash., on Thursday, Sept. 23 from 1 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The workshop, facilitated by Gregg Walker of Oregon State University, is part of a Corps-sponsored demonstration project to evaluate the regional management of sediment in the MCR littoral zone. The workshop will feature presentations from specialists about projects occurring in the MCR littoral zone and discussions of future RSM activities. The workshop will employ an innovative approach called collaborative learning to look at complex natural resource issues where there are many parties, multiple issues, deeply held values, cultural differences, scientific and technical uncertainty and legal and jurisdictional constraints.

The second event is a field trip in the Long Beach, Wash., and Astoria, Ore., areas scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 25. Gregg Walker and Pat Corcoran of Oregon State University Extension will facilitate the field trip.Field trip participants will meet at the Oregon State University Seafood Lab in Astoria at 10 a.m. Transportation to and from the field trip sites will be provided.

The demonstration project, which covers sediment management from Point Grenville, Wash., to Tillamook Head, Ore., and to River Mile 7 in the Columbia River, is part of a national initiative to coordinate activities in coastal zones to retain sand in the littoral systems fostering balanced, natural systems and reduced project costs.

If you are interested in attending either or both of these events, please contact Doris McKillip at (503) 808-4348. To learn more about Regional Sediment Management, the Institute for Water Resources under their Policy Studies Program has prepared a report entitled "Regional Sediment Management: Background and Overview of Initial Implementation."
