The Dalles Lock and Dam visitor center opened for 2004 summer season

Portland, Ore. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is pleased to announce that the Seufert Visitor Center at The Dalles Dam, Ore., is open. Limited resources had caused an earlier decision to keep the visitor center closed this summer. The center will be open Wednesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., through Sept. 6.

"By reducing the number of on-site personnel and interpretive and water safety programs at The Dalles Lock and Dam, we minimized the overall costs enough to allow for the reduced operating schedule, said Mark Eddings, park manager at The Dalles/John Day Project. Due to the high operation costs, the tour train will not be operational this season.

"Our objective is to provide a safe and healthful environment in which the public can recreate," Eddings added. "The Corps decided that wherever possible, it was better to offer decreased services than to not open Corps sites at all."

The dam is located 2 miles east of the city of The Dalles. To reach the Seufert Visitor Center, take exit 87 from I-84 onto Route 197 north, or Route 197 south from Washington State Highway 14, then proceed east on Clodfelter Way.

Nearly 40,000 visitors toured The Dalles Dam in 2003. The visitor center, located at Seufert Park on the Oregon shore, was named for the Seufert family, operators of a nearby fish cannery from the late 1800s until The Dalles Dam was built in 1957.
