Portland, Ore.-The Portland District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has published an update to its history, which focuses on events between 1980 and 2000.
Currents of Change highlights the Corps' mission in environmental work, fisheries and endangered species, navigation, hydropower, recreation, responding to emergencies and wetlands. There are also chapters on how the Corps has changed the way it does business.
Several monumental events such as the eruption of Mount St. Helens and the listing of endangered salmon under the Endangered Species Act occurred between 1980 and 2000. These events will shape the region for years to come.
During these past 20 years the Corps' focus on environmental issues has had to adapt considerably to the changing values and priorities of the nation. This edition demonstrates how the Portland District continues to serve the region's residents and the diverse interests, while adapting to the changes.
Currents of Change is available on CD and the World Wide Web at: https://www.nwp.usace.army.mil/pa. A limited number of printed copies are available.
