Portland, Ore.- On Oct. 30, federal reservoir regulators will reduce the flow of water released from Blue River Dam to allow inspection of the dam's regulating outlet.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will reduce the volume of water released from the dam, located 40 miles east of Eugene, from 100 cubic feet per second to about 10 cfs during the inspection. The inspection should take less than one day, at which time water releases will be increased to about 100 cfs.
Inspectors will enter the regulating outlet, which controls the amount of water released downstream of the dam, to look for signs of wear or damage. It was not possible to inspect this portion of the facility last May when the Corps conducted it's periodic inspection of Blue River Dam because of concerns about potential impacts to listed species.
Officials were concerned about having too little water in the Blue River below the dam for adult salmon and steelhead during the spring migration.
Corps dams are inspected every five years under the Corps' Dam Safety Program. Blue River Dam was last inspected in 1996.
