Portland, Ore. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is evaluating a permit application to fill about 1 acre of wetlands in Sutherlin, Ore. The purpose of the project is to develop a 52-lot subdivision.
As part of its permit evaluation process, the Corps is requesting public comment on the proposed project prior to making its determination on whether to issue a permit for the work.
The project involves placing 2,099 cubic yards of material to fill about 1 acre of wetland area out of 5.08 acres of wetland on a 25-acre site. The location is South Side Road, 400 feet southeast of the bridge over Sutherlin Creek, at creek mile 7.0, in Sutherlin. If the Corps determines that mitigation will be required, the Corps will evaluate the applicant's proposal to enhance 0.05 acres of wetland and create 1.66 acres of wetland area on site.
The Corps will consider whether the proposed project meets standards of the Clean Water Act. Preliminary determinations indicate that the proposed activity may affect an endangered or threatened species or its critical habitat. Consultation under Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act will be initiated and a permit will not be issued until the consultation process is completed.
For a copy of the Corps' Public Notice 2001-00505, which describes the proposed project in detail (including photocopies of drawings in support of the proposed project), please write to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, ATTN: CENWP-OP-GP (William R.
