Portland, Ore. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is evaluating an application to remove about 450 cubic yards of gravel, sand and organic debris from a backwater channel on the Willamette River. As part of its permit evaluation process, the Corps is requesting public comments on the proposed project prior to making its determination on whether to issue or deny a permit for the work.
The work on the east bank of the Willamette River near Harrisburg, Ore., would be done to enhance the channel for fish and wildlife habitat. The east bank of the river will be sloped and replanted with native plants. The materials removed would be placed in an on-site upland area. The Corps will determine if the proposed project meets standards of Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act and Section 404 of the Clean Water Act. Consultations required under the Endangered Species Act will be completed before a permit could be issued.
For a copy of the Corps’ public notice, 2000-00531, which describes the proposed project in detail, please write to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, ATTN: CENWP-OP-GP, P.O. Box 2946, Portland, OR 97208-2946.
