Corps seeks input on Coquille drainage and flood control project

Portland, Ore. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is evaluating a permit application for a project to provide flood damage reduction and drainage for pasture land near Coquille, Ore. As part of its permit evaluation process, the Corps is requesting public comments on the proposed project prior to making its determination on whether to issue or deny a permit for the work.

The site is located adjacent to Coquille River Mile 20 in Coos County. The work would consist of annual excavation of up to 800 cubic yards (cy) of sediments from three miles of drainage ditches over a five-year period. The applicant also would replace or repair up to 12 existing culverts. Excavated material would be spread thinly over 10 acres of pastured wetland.

The Corps will consider whether the proposed project meets standards of the Clean Water, Endangered Species and Coastal Zone Management acts and will look at the overall impact of the project on the affected area. The proposed project may impact endangered Salmon or its critical habitat. A permit will not be issued until consultations required under the Endangered Species Act are completed.

For a copy of the Corps’ Public Notice 1999-00660, which describes the proposed project in detail, please write to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, ATTN: CENWP-OP-GP, P.O. Box 2946, Portland, OR 97208-2946. A copy of the public notice is posted on the Corps’ Internet site at https://www.nwp.usace.army.mil/op/g/notices/199900660.pdf. Photocopies of drawings supporting the proposed project are included in the public notice.

Written comments must reach the Corps by June 12, 2000, and should be mailed to
