The Veterinary Services (VS) Regional Offices carry out the VS Mission by overseeing 41 VS area offices covering the United States and its territories including ports along the US borders with Canada and Mexico. VS Regional Offices are separated into Eastern (ER) and Western (WR) regions roughly along the Mississippi River (exception MN in ER). Each regional office is managed by a director and three associate directors, one of whom is responsible for emergency management and the remaining two directly manage the Area Offices. The regions oversee animal health issues via regional epidemiologists managing animal disease programs and import/export veterinarians responding to live animal and animal product issues. An administrative officer with support staff manages budget, federal and state cooperative agreements, GIS and information technology for each region. The ER oversees 21 Area Offices covering 28 states, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. The WR oversees 20 Area Offices covering 23 states, and the Pacific Territories.
