Corps seeks comments on Lost Creek fuels reduction project

PORTLAND, Ore. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is seeking comments on its proposal to improve fire protection and forest health on 86 acres around the Corps’ Lost Creek Lake office and facilities between Shady Cove and Prospect, Ore.

The Corps proposes to reduce the density of trees and brush in the area by cutting and piling small-diameter live and dead trees and downed woody vegetation in the spring and burning the piles in the fall and winter.

The Corps will treat portions of the project area each year as funding permits.

The intent of the project is to reduce the area’s vulnerability to highly destructive wildland fires and insect and disease infestations, and maintain the natural diversity of tree species and ages.

The Corps is soliciting comments on this proposal from the public; federal, state and local agencies; Indian Tribes; and other interested parties. Comments must be received by Feb. 5. The environmental assessment with details of the proposal is available at http://www.nwp.usace.army.mil/pm/e/en_plan_assess.asp.
