New Era Canned Goods Recall Alert

Be sure to read these two press releases that were posted to ECOS regarding recalls announced by U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for specific products manufactured by New Era Canning Company. No USDA-purchased commodities are involved at this time.

New Era Canning Company Recalls Canned GFS Fancy Blue Lake Cut Green Beans Because of Possible Health Risk  (12/21/07)
New Era Canning Company Announces New Recall of Certain Lots of Mexican-style Chili Beans, Green Beans and Dark Red Kidney Beans Because of Possible Health Risk  (01/08/08)

Although there are no reports of illness or injury from consuming these products, it is important that you assure that cans listed in these recalls are removed from school food service operations, should any be found in their inventories.

All school food service operators should check all of their cans from the New Era company and report any abnormal cans (swelling, bulging, leaking) by contacting FDA at 1-888-SAFEFOOD, or FNS headquarters: either Brenda Halbrook (703-305-2608; brenda.halbrook@fns.usda.gov) or Marion Hinners (703-305-2647; marion.hinners@fns.usda.gov).

Any abnormal cans should not be served and should be discarded, or held for examination if requested by FDA. Any questions about the safety of New Era products should be directed to FDA at 1-888-SAFEFOOD.
