Emergency Shelters

Since July 1, 1999, nutritious CACFP meals and snacks have been available to children residing in emergency shelters.

Age Limitations for Children Receiving Meals in Emergency Shelters - Interim Rule
  This interim rule, published January 3, 2006, raised the age limit for residents of emergency shelters who are eligible to receive CACFP meals to include children through age 18. This rule extends eligibility for participation to emergency shelters that primarily serve children through age 18 who are homeless and seeking shelter without their families.  
 
Questions and Answers
  Memorandum answers specific questions about the approval of shelters and the meal services they provide to children in CACFP. It was issued on March 14, 2000.
 
Receiving Commodities
  Memorandum, issued on August 18, 1999, clarifies that homeless shelters in CACFP may also receive and use USDA commodity foods.
 
Participation of Emergency Shelters in CACFP
  Memorandum was issued on March 30, 1999. It explains how emergency shelters can serve meals to homeless children through CACFP.
