2004 Conservation Security Program (CSP)

General Program Information

CSP is a voluntary program that provides financial and technical assistance to promote the conservation and improvement of soil, water, air, energy, plant and animal life, and other conservation purposes on Tribal and private working lands. Working lands include cropland, grassland, prairie land, improved pasture, and range land, as well as forested land that is an incidental part of an agriculture operation. The program is available in all 50 States, the Caribbean Area and the Pacific Basin area. The program provides equitable access to benefits to all producers, regardless of size of operation, crops produced, or geographic location.

Blue Earth River Watershed

The Blue Earth River Watershed in south-central Minnesota and northern Iowa is one of 18 watersheds in the nation selected for the new Conservation Security Program (CSP) in 2004.
The Blue Earth Watershed includes parts of Martin, Faribault, Blue Earth, Freeborn, Jackson, Watonwan, and Cottonwood counties in Minnesota and Emmet, Kossuth and Winnebago counties in Iowa. The total watershed comprises approximately 1 million acres with almost 80% located in Minnesota.

The predominant land cover/use is cropland, with the major crops being corn and soybeans. The remaining acres are divided between pastureland, forest, developed land, water and other miscellaneous land.
