USDA Announces Fiscal Year 2008 Sign-up for up to $20 Million in Conservation Innovation Grants

WASHINGTON, Dec. 17, 2007 - Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Chief Arlen Lancaster today announced the request for proposals for Conservation Innovation Grants (CIG) for fiscal year 2008. The CIG program is designed to stimulate the development and adoption of innovative conservation approaches and technologies.

Star in Your Own "Bee Movie"

Little Rock, Ark., Nov. 13, 2007 – The newest animated movie for (adults and) children focuses on social and biological dramas of the insect world. "The Bee Movie" graphically and comically portrays the many dangers and frustrations honey bees must endure and shows what sacrifices are required to put honey on the grocer’s shelf. Hollywood movies aside, I must tell you that the dangers and perils that native bees and our environment face from the decline of valuable pollinators are a very real problem.

USDA Readies $257 Million in CSP Contract Payments

WASHINGTON, Nov. 2, 2007 — Agriculture Department Acting Secretary Chuck Conner today announced that nearly $257 million in Conservation Security Program (CSP) payments are being readied for all 19,393 contracts with eligible landowners and producers.

East Arkansas RC&D receives $45,666 grant for Arkansas State University Farmer's Market

Little Rock, Ark., Oct. 18, 2007 – The East Arkansas Resource Conservation and Development Council, Inc., (RC&D) at Jonesboro was selected for a $45,666. With the grant, the council will research farmers’ and customers’ needs and create educational programs on business practices and crop planning for farm vendors at the Arkansas State University Regional Farmers’ Market.

Natural Resources Conservation Service Accepting Environmental Quality Incentives Program Applications through Oct. 19, 2007

Little Rock, Ark., Sept. 17, 2007 – Farmers and landowners in Arkansas have until Oct. 19, 2007, to submit applications to receive cost-share assistance to implement conservation activities through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) for the 2008 program year. Applicants can sign up at their local USDA/NRCS field service center.

CORNING, New York, June 27, 2007 - Agriculture Under Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment Mark Rey today announced the award of $237,732 to Heifer Project International, Inc., for the “Enhancement of Resource Management on Livestock Operations of Limited Resource Farmers through Training on Prescribed Grazing, Animal Habitat, and Animal Well-Being.”

Conservation Reserve Program Proves a Smart Tool

Jefferson County, Arkansas, producer Felix Smart purchased his farm knowing areas would require special care. Several acres had steep slopes. Smart first tried using no-till practices to control erosion caused by cropping activities on these acres, but that didn't solve the problem.

Event Teaches Lakewood Middle School Students about Water Conservation

Water is our greatest natural resource and educating the next generation on how to protect it is key.  That was the goal of the Backyard Conservation Water Fest held at Lakewood Middle School in North Little Rock April 12 for more than 700 seventh and eighth graders.

Natural Resources Conservation Service Supports Ag Day

Little Rock, Ark., March 12, 2007 – Today, National Agriculture Day is celebrated throughout Arkansas.  “Ag Day is a good time to reflect - and be grateful for - Arkansas agriculture . . . and to share that message with others,” said Kalven L. Sid Lowrance Wins National Earth Team Employee of the Year for 2006

Marshall, Ark. --The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announced today that J. Sidney Lowrance is the National Earth Team Employee of the Year for 2006.  He was nominated for his leadership and contributions to the Earth Team Volunteer Program.  In 2006, Lowrance, district conservationist at Marshall, Arkansas, and his team of volunteers built and distributed 125 Eastern Bluebird nesting boxes throughout the state.  They also distributed 37,000 tree seedlings in Searcy County.  Groups of volunteers contributed 2,142 volunteer hours in completing both projects.

NRCS Holds Open House to Celebrate Digital Soil Survey Completion in Every Arkansas County

Little Rock, Ark. -- The Natural Resources Conservation Service holds an open house to celebrate the completion of having a digital soil survey for every county in Arkansas. The public is invited to attend the celebration from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 28 in the State Capitol Rotunda.
