USDA Awards More Than $12 Million in Water Quality Grants
WASHINGTON — Agriculture Secretary
Ann M. Veneman announced Dec. 10 that a $550,000 grant has been awarded to the
University of Arkansas to conduct research, education and extension programs
aimed at improving the quality of the nation’s water resources. Twenty-one other
institution also received grants totaling more than $12 million.

NRCS Revises Technical Standards and Requests

WASHINGTON, Dec. 8, 2003—USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service Chief
Bruce Knight today announced that the agency has issued five new or revised
conservation practice standards that provide guidance for applying conservation
technology on the land.

Farm Family of the Year announces eight district winners
Little Rock – The eight district farm families have been selected in the annual

USDA releases final rule on Environmental Quality Incentives Program,

Service has released the final rule for the Environmental Quality Incentives
Program. The 2002 Farm Bill reauthorized and amended the program.

USDA offers long-term protection for essential plant and animal habitat
WASHINGTON, May 15, 2003-Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman today announced
a new conservation tool to help farmers and ranchers restore and protect
wildlife habitat – 15-year agreements for the Wildlife Habitat Incentives
Program.

Free Farm Bill seminar scheduled on anniversary of law to help farmers, fish
and wildlife
LITTLE ROCK, May 16, 2003 - Conservation groups, state agencies and farm
service organizations team up to conduct a free seminar, on the first
anniversary of the signing of the 2002 Farm Bill, helping farmers and other land
managers take full advantage of the conservation programs and financial benefits
it provides. The seminar, sponsored by the Arkansas Wildlife Federation,
National Wildlife Federation and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, will be
held in Little Rock, May 22 at 6:30 p.m. Representatives from USDA's Natural
Resources Conservation Service and Farm Service Agency will provide guidance to
landowners interested in signing up for the 2002 Farm Bill's widely-expanded
conservation programs during the seminar at the University of Arkansas'
Cooperative Extension Service building, located at 2301 S. University Ave., one
block north of the UALR campus.

USDA signs Technical Service Provider Agreement with the Irrigation
Association
WASHINGTON, May 8, 2003—The U.S. Department of Agriculture today announced
a cooperative partnership with the Irrigation Association that will help
producers manage their water resources more efficiently.

$1.9 billion available in Conservation Assistance for farmers and ranchers
ANNAPOLIS, Md., April 22, 2003 -- Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman said
more than $1.8 billion in funding, released through the Natural Resources
Conservation Service, will help producers with conservation planning and
voluntary conservation programs such as the Environmental Quality Incentives
Program and Wetlands Reserve Program. Special emphasis has been placed on
conservation practices and programs to help landowners recover from the drought.

USDA requests proposals for the Farmland Protection Program
WASHINGTON, April 9, 2003—USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service
(NRCS) is requesting proposals for the Farmland Protection Program (FPP) from
federally recognized Indian tribes, states, units of local government or
nongovernmental organizations to cooperate in the acquisition of conservation
easements on farms and ranches.

Dennis Carman, a 1969 graduate of Casey County High School, was recently
inducted into the Arkansas Academy of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at
the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark.

Program
USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service Chief Bruce Knight today
announced that the advance notice of proposed rulemaking and request for
comments on the Conservation Security Program (CSP) will be released for
publication to the Federal Register. This is a new program authorized in the
2002 Farm Bill.

Open house ceremony for USDA-NRCS Earth Team Bluebird Trail
When Eastern Bluebirds come to town looking for homes, they will find them
thanks to USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service Earth Team volunteers.
Volunteers built and installed 300 bluebird houses in Miller County, Ark.,
and Bowie County, Texas. A news conference/open house ceremony to honor these
volunteers and the 300 bluebird nesting boxes will be held at 11 a.m., Feb. 21,
at the U. S. Post Office and Courthouse at State Line, 500 North State Line
Avenue in Texarkana.
