1980 USGS MIPS is created by moving the Flagstaff Image Processing System (FIPS) from a PDP 11/44 in a computer room environment, to a PDP 11/23 in an office environment. Image viewing is handled using specialized hardware image displays.
1986 USGS MIPS is ported from the PDP/RSX11M platform to a MicroVAX II/VMS. Specialized image displays are still used.
June 1992 to June 1995 USGS MIPS is ported from the VAX/VMS environment to the DEC Alpha under Digital UNIX and Open VMS using X windows and OSF Motif. Image viewing is now handled using X windows devices.
February 1998 USGS MIPS is ported to the Silcon Graphics under IRIX64.
(Note: The Silicon Graphics port is not yet available in the public distribution. Contact MIPS Manager at the address below if you are interested in obtaining the SGI ported distribution.)
