Pneumonic plague is a life-threatening infection of the lungs. It occurs when someone breathes in Yersinia pestis particles. Pneumonic plague is contagious, and an outbreak would be difficult to contain. It can be deadly if not treated quickly, preferably within 24 hours of the appearance of symptoms.
