Subject Area:  Other Resources

Description:  Bill Nye, scientist, engineer, comedian, author, and inventor, is a man with a mission: to help foster a scientifically literate society, to help people everywhere understand and appreciate the science that makes our world work.  It was in Seattle that Bill began to combine his love of science with his flair for comedy.  He won the Steve Martin look-alike contest and developed dual careers as an engineer by day and a stand-up comic by night.  Eventually, he quit his day engineering day job and made the transition to a comedy writer and performer on Seattle's home-grown ensemble comedy show, Almost Live. This is where "Bill Nye the Science Guy®" was born. The show appeared before Saturday Night Live and later on Comedy Central, originating at KING-TV, Seattle's NBC affiliate.

Title:  Engineering is Elementary - Engineering and Technology Lessons for Children
Link:  http://www.mos.org/doc/1545
Subject Area:  Other Resources

Description:  Children are born engineers.  They are fascinated with building, taking things apart, and how things work.  As our society increasingly depends on engineering and technology, it is vital that we foster engineering and technological literacy among children in K-12 educational settings.  Engineering is Elementary (EiE) promotes learning and teaching of engineering and technology by elementary school students, grades 1-5, and their teachers.

In partnership with 10 lead teachers from five Massachusetts school districts, EiE creates materials that integrate engineering and technology concepts and skills with elementary science lessons.  To support classroom implementation, the project also offers professional development workshops for elementary school teachers and curriculum coordinators to help them acquire the knowledge of and comfort with engineering concepts and skills, as well as with related pedagogical approaches.
