Statement by Mike Leavitt, Secretary of Health and Human Services, Regarding President-Elect Barack Obama’s Nomination of Senator Tom Daschle To be the Next Secretary of Health and Human Services

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is the principal government agency tasked with protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services, particularly to the most vulnerable among us.

I have high regard for Senator Daschle. His leadership experience, familiarity with Washington, and interest in health care will serve him well as Secretary.

Senator Daschle will lead a remarkable agency filled with devoted public servants who will continue to promote the health of all Americans.

We will continue to work to ensure a smooth and efficient transition.
