The Center designs, develops and conducts strategic-level games and exercises to provide experiential learning In support of the teaching objectives of the National Defense University. Working closely with the Institute for National Strategic Studies on issues of national security policy and strategy development and analysis, the Center provides state-of-the-art political-military exercises for the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD), the Joint Staff and the Combatant Commands of the Department of Defense.
The Center conducts crisis decision exercises for Congressional leadership, designed to give senior government officials insights into the nuance and complexity of policymaking in the current global security environment, illuminate policy and organizational options, and improve dialog between the Executive-Legislative branches of the Federal government on critical national security issues.
On behalf of the National Security Council, the Center conducts a program of Interagency Transformation, Education and After Action Review (ITEA) for the strategic policy-making community, including executive branch departments and agencies, interagency components of regional combatant commands, and headquarters staff of non-governmental and international organizations.
The Center conducts an extensive outreach program to numerous colleges, universities and educational programs.
The NSGC is organized into three divisions.

STRATEGIC MILITARY AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT DIVISION (SMASD)
|

SMASD provides curriculum support to NDU institutions including the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF), the National War College (NWC), the Information Resources Management College (IRMC), and the Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies (CHDS). SMASD is also responsible for the design and implementation of the annual Crisis Decision Exercise for component colleges.
In addition, SMASD provides exercise support to the Combatant Commands and develops and facilitates the tri-annual J-3 Deputy Director for Anti-Terrorism and Force Protection (DD AT/FP) level IV exercises for senior military leaders and staff officers.
It also develops consequence management exercises for senior DoD leadership and the military services.

SECURITY STRATEGY & POLICY DIVISION (SSPD)
|

SSPD provides educational events including
policy simuations and exercies to members of the Executive
branch strategic decision-making comunity in the National
Capital Region and at the regional Combatant Command Joint
Interagency Coordination Groups (JIACGs), through the Interagency
Transformation, Education and After Action Review (ITEA)
program. The ITEA program uses simulations that stress regional
and functional crisis management and conflict resolution issues,
as well as after-action review, to provide participants a
non-threatening environment in which to discuss and test innovative
approaches to complex crises and also encourage interagency
cooperation.
SSPD's support to NDU colleges includes
scenario development for the National War College's Strategist
at War, National Military Strategy, and the Failed State and
State Building electives.
SSPD provides outreach crisis decision simulations
to Young Presidents' Organization, the National Youth Leadership
Forum, Syracuse University, and numerous other educational
institutions and programs.

STRATEGIC PLANNING & INTEGRATION DIVISION (SPID)
|

SPID directs the Strategic Policy Forum (SPF) program. Initiated by the Secretary of Defense, the SPF program brings together Members of Congress, senior Executive Branch officials, and military leaders for strategic-level crisis simulation exercises that highlight the nuance and complexity of national security policy formulation in the current global political environment. Designed to enhance understanding of the complexities of crisis decision-making in an interagency setting, the forums allow for an exploration of emerging national security issues and examination of the capabilities and limitations of various instruments of national power in dealing with these security challenges, thereby illuminating policy and organizational options available to U.S. decision-makers.

NATIONAL STRATEGIC GAMING CENTER FACILITIES
|

The Center is temporarily located in Marshall Hall on Fort Lesley J. McNair in Washington, DC. In May, 2008, it moves to new
permanent facilities in Lincoln Hall.
The Center employs numerous software tools and computer models, including the Forecast Model and the Oxford Econometric Model.
The Center continuously researches new technologies for application to the strategic gaming and simulation environment.
