Developmental assignments are used to meet the objectives of the career program, and are a key part of any career plan. However, required managerial and leadership training and developmental opportunities are often not available locally to all candidates. In order to attain the requisite skills and experience for key positions, the Army expects careerists to demonstrate a willingness to accept training and development assignments outside of their geographical and functional areas. Though you are not required to accept transfers of employment or to compete for jobs on a Corps-wide basis, it is essential that you understand and appreciate the importance of varied assignments to your career objectives. The duties of many positions, particularly those at senior grade levels, can best be performed by employees who have had a variety of work experiences at different organizational levels or in different geographical locations. Therefore, your flexibility in the choice of developmental assignments is often an added advantage in consideration for promotion. Failure to participate in a variety of developmental assignments may impact an employee's competitiveness for key positions when compared with candidates who have enhanced their qualifications through these assignments.
