Senior’s Energy Assistance Program Begins in CT

A new energy assistance program for higher income seniors begins December 1 in Connecticut .

The $4 million Elderly Home Heating Assistance Plan (EHHAP) will provide payments of up to $500 directly to utilities and fuel vendors for heating expenses incurred from November 1, 2008 , through May 15, 2009.

Connecticut residents 65 or older whose income is equal to or less than the state median income (SMI) are eligible. For a household of one, the annual SMI is $48,78; for a family of two, it is $63,798. Seniors eligible for the state’s LIHEAP must first exhaust those benefits before being eligible for EHHAP.

The program was funded as part of a $79 million energy package that passed the state legislature in August. A $500,000 grant for program outreach was given to the statewide fuel fund, Operation Fuel.
