Program Description
The Special Milk Program (SMP) for children is designed to encourage consumption of fluid milk by children who are enrolled in an eligible facility which does not participate in any other meal service program. Any school or nonprofit child care institution, summer camp, settlement house or any similar nonprofit institution devoted to the care and training of children can participate in the Special Milk Program upon request. Louisiana has approximately 17 sponsoring organizations that annually operate the SMP at approximately 18 sites across the state.
General Program Requirements
Any child in a school or institution that participates in the Special Milk Program can get milk. Schools may elect to offer free milk to low-income children. In order to qualify for this benefit program, you must be a resident of the State of Louisiana, your household's annual income before taxes must not exceed $19,240 if one person lives in the household; $25,900 if two people live in the household; $32,560 if three people live in the household; $39,220 if four people live in the household; $45,880 if five people live in the household; $52,540 if six people live in the household; $59,200 if seven people live in the household. For larger households, add $6,660 for each additional person in the home.
