DoDEA's Online Learning Academy to Conduct Registration for School Year 2008-2009

ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA - Registration for the Department of Defense Education Activity's (DoDEA's) School Year 2008-2009 Online Learning Academy (OLA) will begin on April 15. Registration will be held in two sessions; April 15-June 1, and July 15-August 1.

The OLA is DoDEA's distance learning program. The program, which began in 1986, offers students in Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS) in Europe and the Pacific as well as Defense Dependents Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) the opportunity to take courses when they encounter scheduling or course sequence conflicts or if their school does not offer a particular course they need. The OLA provides a variety of courses ranging in subjects from mathematics to fine arts. The OLA courses are open to any DoDEA student who needs or wants to complete an online course. During the current school year, more than 400 students are enrolled in 39 courses throughout the DoDEA system. In addition to courses taught by DoDEA teachers, some courses are offered through Apex Learning.

Plans for the 2008-2009 DoDEA Online Learning Academy include an expanded list of online courses in areas such as computer science, English, Fine Arts, Health/Physical Education, Math, Science, Social Studies and World Languages. Advanced Placement offerings include AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Computer Programming A & AB, AP English Language & Composition, AP English Literature & Composition, AP French Language, AP German Language, AP Government, AP Macroeconomics, AP Microeconomics, AP Physics, AP Spanish Language, AP Statistics, and AP US History.

"Priority for enrollment in OLA courses will be given to small schools and to seniors who need the courses for graduation," said Patricia Riley, DoDEA's Distance Learning Program Coordinator. "Each school is also limited to ten students per course per semester, and there are also special instructions applicable to students interested in Advanced Placement (AP) courses as well as middle school students," Riley added.

Riley recommends that students contact their counselors now for more information about OLA courses or for assistance in registering.

DoDEA plans, directs, coordinates, and manages the education programs for Department of Defense (DoD) dependents who would otherwise not have access to a high-quality public education. DoDEA consists of the Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS) located overseas, and the Department of Defense Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) located in the United States and its territories and possessions. DoDEA provides education to eligible DoD military and civilian dependents from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.
