New Jersey Fuel Fund Gets $10 Million

On December 12, as part his Economic Assistance and Recovery Plan for New Jersey, Governor Jon Corzine signed a bill providing $10 million for New Jersey Shares, a statewide fuel fund.

The fund provides qualified applicants one-time grants of up to $700 for natural gas bill assistance, up to $300 for electric, or up to $700 for electrically-heated homes.  Through the additional state funding, assistance is being expanded to include those using deliverable fuels, such as oil, for heat.

New Jersey Shares was established in 1998 by the state’s leading energy companies and non-profits.  It assists New Jersey residents who cannot afford their heating bills and do not qualify for LIHEAP. Applications are accepted through a network of 148 intake agencies at 199 local sites throughout the state. Eligibility is based on a demonstrated financial crisis and a history of good-faith utility bill payments.

The Governor’s aid package also included money for food and legal assistance.
