Libby Dam increases flows in flood control operation

Tuesday afternoon, Libby Dam began increasing outflows above the planned 25,000 cfs. These increased outflows are necessary to prevent even higher outflows later as Lake Koocanusa refills quickly because of snowmelt.
A wetter-than-normal May, increased snowpack and unexpected high temperatures have all contributed to runoff into Lake Koocanusa that is quite large for this late in June. Recent inflow to the reservoir has been over 60,000 cfs. The Corps of Engineers is monitoring the water scenario closely as Lake Koocanusa moves to within seven feet of full pool on Wednesday morning. Depending on inflows over the next couple weeks, Libby Dam may have to further increase spills.
The increased outflows are temporary and should slow refill of Lake Koocanusa. Libby Dam staff are dispatched along the river to monitor water levels at the river banks.
