Howard Hanson Dam cuts flows in half; 17-year-old boy missing in Green River

Howard Hanson Dam cuts flows in half; 17-year-old boy missing in Green RiverHoward Hanson Dam on the Green River cut outflows in half Monday evening following notification by King County that a 17-year-old boy was missing in the river. Flows will be held down Tuesday pending search and rescue operations by local authorities. The dam, east of Kent, was built and is operated by the Corps of Engineers for flood control and water supply to the city of Tacoma. Marian Valentine, senior water manager of the Corps' Seattle District, said, "Because of the high snowpack, the public this spring can expect all rivers in Western Washington to be running deeper, faster and stronger. Everyone should use extreme caution when near the rivers."
