Lake Pend Oreille lowering for winter beginning Sept. 15

Lake Pend Oreille lowering for winter beginning Sept. 15Contact: Patricia Graesser (206) 764-3760 Sept. 5, 2001 SEATTLE—On Sept. 15 Lake Pend Oreille will begin falling to its winter level, according to the Seattle District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Corps operates Albeni Falls Dam, which regulates the level of Lake Pend Oreille. The lake was at an elevation of 2,062.3 feet above sea level Sept. 3, and the Corps will start lowering the lake beginning Sept. 15, until it reaches an elevation of 2,051 feet by the end of November. The lake elevation ranges from 2,062 to 2,062.5 feet above sea level throughout the summer season for summer recreation uses. The Corps lowers the lake elevation for the winter each year to provide flood control protection and to make the water available for fall power generation.
