Regional General Permits

NEW! Dock General Permit 2006-10-001
Authorization for the construction of, installation of, maintenance and/or repair of piers, floating docks (including joint use and community docks), boat/jet ski lifts, mooring piles, dolphins, covered boat sheds and dock covers, for private non-commercial uses within navigable waters of the United States in the state of South Carolina.

There are two types of General Permits - 'Regional' and 'Nationwide'. This page addresses Regional General Permits. For information on Nationwide General Permits, please click here.

The Corps of Engineers seeks to avoid unnecessary regulatory controls. The general permit program is the primary method of limiting unnecessary federal control over activities which do not justify individual control or which are adequately regulated by another agency.

The term general permit means a Department of the Army authorization that is issued on a nationwide or regional basis for a category or categories of activities when:

(1) Those activities are substantially similar in nature and cause only minimal individual and cumulative environmental impacts; or

(2) The general permit would result in avoiding unnecessary duplication of regulatory control exercised by another Federal, State, or local agency provided it has been determined that the environmental consequences of the action are individually and cumulatively minimal.

The Charleston District of the Corps of Engineers has developed Regional General Permits for the following geographical areas and/or specific activities. These Regional General Permits are issued to, or administered by, either agencies of the State of South Carolina or corporations licensed by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Click on the links below to learn more about these authorizations.

Projects not qualifying for a Regional or Nationwide Permit may qualify for an Individual Department of the Army Permit.
