CERL Researchers Receive Awards

Award photosThe U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) recently announced its agency-wide awards recognizing outstanding contributions in research and development. Several employees with ERDC's Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) were cited.

Alan B. Anderson, Champaign, received the ERDC Research and Development Achievement Award. He was cited for his work in developing the Army Training and Testing Area Carrying Capacity program, which is used to make decisions about vehicular training on military lands. The program has been used to develop an approach to reallocate units as a result of base closures; to develop the original budget submittal and annual allocation of the $30-60 million training land rehabilitation program across 110 installations; and to analyze the environmental effects associated with the stationing of the Army's new Stryker brigades.

Dr. William D. Severinghaus, Mahomet, received the ERDC Award for Outstanding Achievement in Equal Employment Opportunity. He led sustained efforts with Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas, to enhance the school's curriculum for educating Native American students and to provide research opportunities for both students and faculty. His efforts culminated with the signing of the first U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Educational Partnering Agreement with a Native American institution.

A 29-member team representing government, industry, and academia received the Award for Outstanding Team Effort, which recognized the group's contributions to demolition waste reduction at military installations. Local recipients include Richard Lampo, Thomas Napier, and Susan Drozdz, all of Champaign; Deborah Curtin and Dr. Edgar Smith, Mahomet; Stephen Cosper, Urbana; and Jacqueline Dearborn, Yorkville. The team is conducting multiple projects to increase recycling and reuse of military buildings slated for demolition.

ERDC is the premier research and development facility for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It consists of seven laboratories at four geographical sites, with over 2,000 employees, $1.2 billion in facilities, and an annual research program exceeding $570 million. It conducts research in both military and civil works mission areas for the Department of Defense and the nation.
